About The Stop
The Stop strives to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality.
From our origins as one of Canada’s first food banks in the early 80’s, The Stop has since blossomed into a thriving community hub where neighbours participate in a broad range of programs that provide healthy food, foster social connections, build food skills, and promote civic engagement.
We prioritize health and dignity, with a focus on systemic change and on the empowerment of cooks, gardeners, and engaged citizens rather than passive recipients of food charity. We value social justice, leadership, healthy food, innovation, dignity, and being a sustainable organization. Underlying all of our efforts is the belief that food is a basic human right.
Communities from across the city and around the world took notice of The Stop’s powerful model, seeking to replicate it in their own neighbourhoods. In 2012, our former Executive Director Nick Saul and Program Director Kathryn Scharf founded a national organization, Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC), to drive the development of community food centres based on The Stop’s model across the country. The Stop is proud to be a founding affiliate, and works collaboratively with CFCC to share what we’ve learned to build stronger, healthier communities from coast to coast.
